Heavyweight hoodies explained: what does GSM mean?

Heavyweight hoodies explained: what does GSM mean?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures how much one square metre of fabric weighs. Hoodie-Hoo's confirmed Signature Double-Layer construction uses a 400GSM outer fabric with a separate 100% cotton lining at 160-170GSM.

What a GSM number tells you

A 400GSM fabric weighs 400 grams per square metre. When comparing similar fabrics, a higher GSM generally means more fabric weight for the same area. The number can help you understand the substance of a fabric, but it does not directly tell you its thickness, softness, stretch or insulation.

Does heavyweight have a fixed definition?

There is no single universal GSM boundary used by every clothing brand for the word heavyweight. Check the actual fabric specification and construction instead of comparing that label alone. A lined hoodie and an unlined hoodie with the same stated outer GSM are different constructions.

Why our two fabric weights are listed separately

For the confirmed Hoodie-Hoo Signature construction, the outer fabric is 400GSM and the lining is 160-170GSM. The lining is 100% cotton. Listing both specifications helps you understand which material each number describes, rather than leaving you to guess whether a quoted GSM includes a lining. We do not present the sum as the GSM of the finished hoodie. A finished garment has shaped panels, seams, trims and potentially different areas of lining. Its total weight is a separate measurement and changes with size.

Does a higher GSM mean better quality?

No. GSM is a measurement, not a quality grade. The right fabric depends on the garment and how you want to wear it. Fabric composition, construction, stitching, fit and care requirements also matter. A lighter T-shirt can be appropriate for warm weather even when a heavier hoodie is your choice for cooler days.

How to use GSM when shopping

First identify whether the number refers to an outer fabric, lining or another component. Then compare like-for-like garments and check their materials and measurements. Consider your preferred feel and the conditions you will wear them in, rather than choosing the largest number alone.
